I cannot believe that I am in my mid 50s and am suddenly in front of the camera all the time having my photo splashed all over my social media and articles. I used to HATE having my photo taken and in fact up until about 6 months ago, there are hardly any pictures of me at all in our family!
One thing about dressing for photos on a regular basis is that I have had to have a really good look at my wardrobe and I soon realised that there is a lot that comes out time after time. At first, I was a bit embarrassed about this. Afterall, what is exciting about seeing the same outfits all the time? But after a while I realised the benefits of having a great capsule wardrobe.
Now, a capsule wardrobe can be anything from say 6 to 50 items of clothing. It depends on your style and what sort of personality you are. But whatever the size, the concept is the same - they are the pieces that will match other items in your wardrobe with ease and save you time and money.

One of my favourite designers who has the capsule concept down to a “T” is Bianca Elgar - https://www.biancaelgar.com/collections/the-capsule-wardrobe-collection-tops-dresses
This tunic dress with chic side splits is made from weighty black Modal jersey. With ¾ length sleeves, a V shaped neckline and with our unique neckline loops. Use these to secure and style a scarf or necklace easily. Destined to become the hardest working piece in your wardrobe.
This Black Silk Twill Kimono Sleeve Top is a versatile and stylish addition to any wardrobe. Wear it as a flattering boxy top, as a bolero (just sling front over your head and shoulders), like a silk scarf, or as you will.
Items like these will be a foundation to your wardrobe - versatile, useful, stylish.
Along with items like these, here is my list of items no 50+ woman’s wardrobe should be without!
1. Biker Jacket
The biker jacket is something that will keep your outfits up-to-date and will go with anything, anywhere! Put over the tops of a colourful t-shirt and jeans for a youthful, fun, look, or pop on top of a evening outfit for a quirky modern take - wear it with attitude and chanel your inner Helen Mirren!
2. Trench Coat
This will be your go to coat for spring, summer and autumn. It is never out of style, always looks chic and elegant. The tie waist accentuates your curves and creates an A-line skirt effect which is universally flattering. Worn over jeans or more formal attire, it was always make a statement for you.
3. Black bootcut or straight cut trousers.
The Bootcut is another universally flattering design, balancing out the hips and elongating the leg line and the straight cut is a classic. Both styles will always be classy and not go out of fashion.

4. Smart Skirt
A knit or leather skirt in a knee length or longer A-line design will be a hardworking addition to your wardrobe.
5. Cashmere jumper
A neutral shade (in your favourite neutral colour) with a v-neck will be an investment you won’t regret. The cost per wear will well into the negatives within a couple of months!
6. Bootcut jeans
Buy a dark wash and these will be very flattering. A dark wash will mean that you can wear them to more formal occasions and dress them up or down with ease.
7. A pair of plain leather heeled pumps
Another essential part of any wardrobe. A classic pump in the heel of your choice, will elevate your outfit - literally!
8. Ankle boots
Ankle boots are easy to wear - choose your favourite heel - look great with skirts, dresses or trousers and are great transition pieces from season to season.
9. White blouse
A crisp, fitted, white blouse is a must for any wardrobe. Dressed down with jeans, up with a smart skirt, worn over or under a dress - the list is endless.
10. White T-shirt
when you find your holy grail of a white t-shirt, buy the company!! Seriously though, a white t-shirt is indispensable. Buy a size up so it doesn’t cling too much. A v or a scoop neck is the most flattering and a sleeve that finishes at the elbow will hide a multitude of sins!
T-shirts are also a great layering item for under jumpers, jackets or even dresses and are a wonderful blank canvas to build your outfit upon.
11. Dress
Dresses are the easiest way to look put together and polished as they require very little else for styling.
I absolutely adore Joyce Young's casual chic collection - https://www.joyceyoungcollections.co.uk/collections/casual-chic/
They are so comfortable, classic and versatile. They are also cut to skim and flatter the mature figure - what more could you want in a dress!
12. Scarf
A scarf is so useful. Worn around the neck as a statement, or hanging loose to give the eye vertical lines to draw attention away from the bust or stomach, it will ellevate any outfit. You can add colour using a scarf, tie it around your hair on a bad hair day, or around your wrist for a bit perzazz!
Here is an absolute master class in how adaptable and stylish a scarf is from Bianca Elgar
I hope that has inspired you to look at your own capsule wardrobe. Remember, when buying capsule items, buy the best quality you can afford as they will be the most worn items in your wardrobe.
